A year and a half ago, I left my job in academia to work on my first novel. It’s been a joyful, rewarding, and grueling process. I’ve had productive days and not so productive days. I’ve read books and articles and taken road trips for research. I’ve read books by writers about writing. I’ve interviewed friends and family to benefit from their expertise on a range of topics from nuclear energy to meteorological anomalies. I’ve questioned the decision to walk away from what could’ve been a rewarding career to work on a project no one may find worthwhile except me.
